Around The Area
In this uncrowded part of Scotland you can really relax and unwind amidst
a timeless landscape of mountain, moorland and coast. Whether you’re
looking for castles and abbeys, gardens or craft workshops, or ideas
for things to do or places to eat, you’ll find more than enough
to tempt you here.
The surrounding area offers many activities and places
of interest - something for everyone. Watersports are available locally offering
sailing, canoeing, windsurfing and water-skiing. For golf lovers the area
will prove to be the ideal destination, as there is an abundance of excellent
golf
courses. Fishermen are also well catered for with coarse, sea and game
fishing. Beach lovers can enjoy the coastline
with its sandy stretches and quiet coves. The area abounds in forest and
hill walks with many interesting nooks and crannies to be explored. Two
of the best
ways to take in the fresh air and beautiful scenery is to go cycling or pony
trekking through the estate, quiet country roads or follow the Sustrans-cycle
route, which runs through the area.
Garden enthusiasts have many gardens to
visit, one being the wondrous ‘Botanic Gardens’ which have many
tropical plants growing naturally due to the Gulf air stream, it has to be
seen to be believed. The area boasts many places of Historical interest including
a number of National Trust for Scotland properties such
as Threave Castle and Gardens.
The
towns close by offer their own attractions. The historic harbour town
of Kirkcudbright, once famed as an artists’ colony,
offers you a chance to stroll through the bustle of the working harbour, observe
the Harbour Gallery exhibitions, experience historic sites and take some of
its charm home with you after visiting the selection of traditional shops.
The market town of Castle Douglas is also well worth a visit - pop in to the

on. It is one of the most modern in Scotland and with a throughput of stockworth £20
million a year, reflects the surrounding area’s importance in the farming
world. Castle Douglas is a modern town with a homely fusion of old and new
providing interest for all the family.
